Remember, remember your pets this November

Posted 10th October 2008

Autumn is the season of Guy Fawkes Night and Halloween, so while you may be outside celebrating, spare a thought for your pets. Cats and dogs should be kept indoors while the fireworks are flying, and if they are particularly frightened by the bangs and crashes, it may be worth speaking to one of our vets about obtaining a............more

Myxomatosis

Posted: 5th September 2008

Every year we see myxomatosis in pet rabbits. It is a fatal viral disease that starts with a swollen face and eyes, ears and bottom. It is progressively fatal and there is no cure. It is spread by insects such as mosquitoes and rabbit fleas. As most gardens around here are reasonably close to parks/scrub/wasteland/farmland most pet rabbits we serve are at risk.

But......it is preventable! One simple vaccination a year protects most rabbits, and there is a licensed insecticide as well for rabbits.

Your rabbit is at high risk unless vaccinated. Phone us today to book this simple measure to protect your bunny.

Dog Thefts on the Increase

Posted: 12th July 2008

BBC1 news gave out a warning to dog owners this morning. There has been a recent rise in dog thefts in the UK. The breeds most at risk are

  • Springer Spaniels
  • Jack Russell Terriers
  • Yorkshire Terriers
  • Boxers
  • Labrador Retrievers

Having your pet identichipped with a tag hanging from its collar showing that your dog is yours is one deterrent to would-be thieves.

Kennel Cough Warning

Posted: 21st June 2008

Dogs can catch an Infectious Bronchitis or Kennel Cough from each other. It is carried in the form of droplets in the air. Your dog will develop a harsh hacking cough. It is commoner in dogs who socialise and come into contact with other dogs such as at shows, kennels, classes or even just at the park.

We are seeing more kennel cough as we speak (early June) and advise vaccination against it at present. Vaccination lasts one year and is given as a nose drop.

Beware of simple shredders at home

Posted: 25th April 2008

A warning in this day and age when we are all aware of identity fraud and we all use shredders at home to destroy our important documents. There have been reported cases of shredders being left plugged in and the switch left on. If you own a curious dog or cat, they are at risk if they possibly lick the shredder of literally shredding their tongues. The outcome is fatal and obviously extremely distressing to both owner and pet.

Turn your shredders off when not in use!

Avoid feeding your dog Macadamia Nuts

Posted: 25th March 2008

More and more chocolate products seem to contain macadamia nuts and these have been shown to be toxic to dogs.

Avoid feeding your dog any chocolate anyway, but be especially careful of macadamia nuts in your pet. Signs of poisoning include weakness in the backlegs and general lethargy.
